Can a strong immune system protect us from COVID-19?

An interesting case came across, from the Diamond Princess cruise liner, where 18% out of 700 infected people had no symptoms although they had tested positive. CDC estimates 25% of the population to be asymptomatic, and some other estimates range up to 30%.

One of the theories why COVID-19 doesn’t even cause a tickle in the throat of asymptomatic people is that they have a stronger innate immune response to the virus.

A group of Australian researchers has mapped immune responses from a group of COVID-19 patients. "We showed that even though COVID-19 is caused by a new virus, in an otherwise healthy person, a robust immune response across different cell types was associated with clinical recovery, similar to what we see in influenza", said one of the collaborators, Professor Katherine Kedzierska.

A citation from a recent report published in Nature Medicine states that: "Three days after the patient was admitted, we saw large populations of several immune cells, which are often a tell-tale sign of recovery during seasonal influenza infection, so we predicted that the patient would recover in three days, which is what happened".

However, at this point, there is still a lot to learn. Many relatively young people without a history of serious disease, eventually find themselves on respirators fighting for their lives. Because of this, there is no way to make a clear prediction that someone is safe.

What can we say for sure is that a healthy lifestyle - not smoking, drinking little or no alcohol, sleeping well, eating a balanced diet, taking regular moderate exercise and reducing stress is helpful for our immune systems to be in the best shape possible.
